In today's ancestry discoveries for the Easley side of my mom's family....when we traveled to my mom's hometown of Halifax last week we visited the courthouse. While at the courthouse I discovered a land deed from 1909 showing that my great-great grandfather bought 61 acres of land for $355.29 from his former slaveowner (who also happened to be his father 😱). This land became known as "Easley Hill" and is where my grandmother and her family were raised. That was such an empowering discovery! It took him 44 years after being freed from slavery but his hard work and perseverance established a legacy to last for generations to come.
